Water flossers

Devices that jet water between teeth – helpful for braces, bridges and implants, but an extra rather than a replacement.

What you need to know

A water flosser sprays a thin stream of water between the teeth and along the gumline. The Oral Health Foundation says some people find them easier than string floss, especially with braces, bridges, implants or limited hand movement.

They don't replace brushing or other interdental cleaning: brushes and floss scrape plaque from the tooth surface in a way water alone can't always manage, and research shows only short-term benefit for gum inflammation.

What to look for

  1. Decide between countertop (larger reservoir, more settings) and cordless (portable, easier to store).
  2. Look for adjustable pressure so you can start gently.
  3. Check which tips are included – orthodontic and implant tips are useful if you need them.
  4. Keep brushing twice a day and using floss or interdental brushes as your dental team advises.
