What you need to know
The NHS recommends cleaning between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes. A Cochrane review found both may reduce gum inflammation, with interdental brushes possibly the more effective where they fit – though the evidence is low certainty.
Interdental brushes suit wider gaps; floss or tape suits tight contacts. Many people use a mix, and your dentist or hygienist can show you the right sizes.
What to look for
- Ask your dental team which interdental brush sizes fit your gaps – you may need more than one.
- If a brush bends or splays, try a smaller size rather than forcing it.
- Tape or waxed floss can be easier to handle than thin floss.
- Avoid wooden toothpicks for digging out food – the NHS says they can damage gums.
- Pick the method you'll actually use every day.
